Fraud/ConsumerDiscover AA — Cardholder Does Not Recognize: What It Is and How to Respond
Discover AA is filed when a cardholder doesn't recognize a transaction on their statement. This is the Discover equivalent of Visa 10.4 — the cardholder may claim the transaction is fraudulent, or they may simply not remember making the purchase. AA is one of the most common Discover dispute codes for e-commerce merchants and is rated Hard to win because without authentication evidence, Discover defaults to the cardholder's side.
The key distinction from genuine fraud: many AA disputes are actually cases of billing descriptor confusion — the cardholder recognizes the purchase but doesn't recognize your company name on their statement. A recognizable billing descriptor that matches your brand name eliminates a large percentage of AA disputes before they're ever filed.
Common reasons you received this dispute
- 1Billing descriptor doesn't match the merchant name the customer knows (e.g., "ACME CORP" instead of "Your Store Name")
- 2Genuine stolen card fraud — the transaction was made by someone else
- 3Friendly fraud — the cardholder made the purchase but claims otherwise to get a refund
- 4Family/household dispute — another person in the household made the purchase
- 5Customer genuinely doesn't remember a purchase made weeks or months ago

How to write your response
Your response must establish that the cardholder (or someone in their household) made the transaction. Lead with delivery confirmation to the billing address and any authentication data. Prior purchase history is particularly strong evidence for AA disputes — it shows the cardholder has a known relationship with your store.
“We are writing to dispute Discover chargeback [reference] under reason code AA. The transaction was placed from IP [x], which corresponds to the cardholder's billing address location. Exhibit A is the delivery confirmation showing delivery to [address]. Exhibit B shows [n] prior undisputed transactions from the same email address. Our billing descriptor '[DESCRIPTOR]' matches the brand name shown in the order confirmation email sent to [email] at the time of purchase (Exhibit C). We respectfully request reversal of this chargeback.”

How to prevent this chargeback
- 1
Make your billing descriptor match your store name exactly: The #1 cause of AA disputes is a descriptor the cardholder doesn't recognize. If your DBA name differs from your legal entity, ensure the descriptor uses the name customers know.
- 2
Include your support phone number in your billing descriptor: Format: "YOURBRAND 800-123-4567" — customers who can call you don't need to dispute.
- 3
Send post-purchase confirmation emails that reinforce your brand name: Include a support contact in every confirmation email. Customers who see a familiar brand name in their inbox are far less likely to dispute a transaction on their statement.
- 4
Log IP, device, and email at checkout: This is your evidence for every AA dispute. Without these records, you have almost no way to prove the cardholder placed the order.
Frequently asked questions
What is Discover AA?
Discover AA is filed when a cardholder states they don't recognize a transaction on their statement. It's Discover's equivalent of Visa 10.4. The cardholder may be claiming fraud, or they may simply not remember or recognize the charge — billing descriptor confusion is a common cause.
How does billing descriptor confusion cause Discover AA disputes?
If your statement descriptor says 'ACME HOLDINGS LLC' but your customers know you as 'YourStore', many customers will file an AA dispute simply because they don't recognize the company name. A descriptor that matches your brand eliminates this entire category of disputes.
How long do I have to respond to Discover AA?
30 calendar days from the chargeback notification date. Discover's response window is the same as Visa.
Does Discover have a CE 3.0 equivalent for AA disputes?
No. Discover does not have a programme equivalent to Visa Compelling Evidence 3.0. Your strongest tools are 3DS authentication, delivery confirmation, and prior account history showing the cardholder has ordered from you before.
